It’s no secret that Guildford is a great place to live. There is so much to see and do in the town, residents and visitors alike are spoilt for choice! One of the best things about the town is sports. There’s plenty going on to watch and even take part in! So, in today’s blog post, we’ve put together a list of three of our favourite Guildford sports that we think you should start watching today. Curious? Keep on reading to find out more about them…

Ice Hockey is a popular addition to the town

In Guildford, we’re lucky enough to have our very own ice rink at Guildford Spectrum. Many people use it for leisure and to spend time with family and friends while picking up a new skill. Others have skating lessons to hone the craft. However, what the Guildford Spectrum ice rink is perhaps most famous for is ice hockey! Our very own ice hockey club is called Guildford Flames, and they regularly play matches against other teams both at home and away.

The team began competing in 1992 and has had a fair amount of success since then! Most recently, they reached the semi-final in the 2018-19 season of the Elite Ice Hockey League. But, they have previously won the English Premier Ice Hockey League and the British National League. The 2019-2020 season looked promising before Covid-19 put a halt to the leagues entirely.

Watching the Guildford Flames at the Spectrum is a popular pastime of many people in the local area and beyond! If you’re interested in watching and learning more about them, possibly the most famous of the Guildford sports, you can visit their website here.

Basketball is also worth a watch

Ice Hockey not your thing? Don’t worry, there are also plenty of other Guildford sports to choose from. How about basketball? The Surrey Scorchers are Guildford’s resident basketball team and they play in the English professional basketball league. This team is relatively new, having been established in 2005 as the Guildford Heat, but they’ve had a lot of success!  They rebranded as the Surrey Scorchers in 2015, and now play their fixtures from Surrey Sports Park.

They also do a lot of work in the community, offering clubs and camps for kids and young people, as well as children’s parties. The Surrey Scorchers Foundation carries on with this work, reaching young people who are at risk of committing crime, disengaged with sport in school, are young carers, have learning disabilities, find it difficult to make friends and may have issues with their weight. They help them to engage with basketball and sport as a whole!

If you’d like to find out more about basketball in Guildford, you can visit the Surrey Scorchers website here and learn all about them and how you can get involved with this sport!

Cricket is the oldest of the Guildford sports

Now, we may be a bit biased here due to our location, but we think that cricket could possibly be the best of the Guildford sports! The cricket club in the town is one of the largest and most successful in Surrey. They are founder members of the Surrey Championship League and their 1st XI play in the First Division. They play regularly at the sports ground on Woodbridge Road and have cricket for men, women, and children.

Cricket has a long history in Guildford. In fact, the earliest known reference to cricket in the English language described a game played at the Royal Grammar School, which is still in the town to this day. In 2013, Guildford Cricket Club as it is today celebrated its 75th anniversary. And, we think that with the popularity of the sport in the town to this day, it will carry on for many, many more!
